My name is Ray Miller. I was born in Connecticut and was raised in Dexter, Maine. At an early age, my family moved to Maine for the love of the outdoors and simplicity of life. My father knew that Maine really was “the way life should be”. After completing high school I was accepted into the United States Coast Guard, where I spent five and a half years. I then decided to begin a career as a Game Warden and graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. My love of the outdoors inspired me to pursue my Maine Master Hunting, Fishing & Recreation Guide license. I established and operated a sporting camp and guide service in Northern Maine while sponsoring children’s recreational programs and speaking to schools across the state on outdoor education. In the spring and summer you could find me hiking a mountain or fly fishing and canoeing on one of Maine’s vast lakes or rivers. I have many outdoor hobbies and interests but at the center of my heart are my 14 year old twins, Jared and Gretchen.
I have learned many things in my life and I realized that I wanted to turn my life experiences and skills towards helping others. Ironwood caught my attention as a unique and genuine program that allows the children a safe environment in which they can learn and grow. As a Behavioral Specialist at Ironwood, I am looking forward to combining my passion and love for the outdoors with my desire to help teens discover themselves and the natural rhythms of nature. I agree with the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson when he said, “make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.” |
