I am Diana George Chapin, a life-long Maine resident and mother of two teen girls. I received a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and a master’s degree in environmental science from the University of Maine. I have always enjoyed working in the garden and woods, observing nature and relating it to my own life. Creating connections between people and nature has been the focus of my professional work. Hosting a public television documentary series on the environment, writing about gardening, running a family farm, and working with Ironwood residents have all been great sharing opportunities. At Ironwood, residents experience the awe and sense of fulfillment that comes with growing one’s own food and they develop a personal relationship with nature. It encourages me how quickly and intuitively Ironwood residents pick up on the parallels between our lives and what happens in nature. Their eagerness to contemplate, grow and change for the better is inspiring and full of hope. Ultimately, I endeavor to help them live the motto “Give a man fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.”
