The music program at Ironwood has been fueled partly by the talent and enthusiasm of the residents themselves. The current music program director is a former Ironwood graduate who was instrumental in creating the first recording-quality musical show for Parents’ Weekend. He leads weekly music sessions during which students strengthen their own skills or try new instruments. There is a variety of basic instruments available, and teens are allowed to use their own. The music “jams” are casual, supporting both the seasoned musician and the teen who thought they could not create or hold a rhythm. The director draws on students’ own skills and interests, exploring folk and contemporary songs, spoken word, sometimes jazz and classical compositions.
Everyone becomes particularly engaged preparing routines for Parents’ Weekend. During the holidays, the group “goes on tour,” sharing their music with local nursing homes. The director is currently trying to set up regular monthly visits to nursing homes. Community service adds a whole new dimension to the residents’ understanding of music. They step into it as a deeply human, communal experience that can be as transformative and empowering as it is fun. A few times a year, visiting musicians hold special concerts or workshops for the residents.
